Welcome to Gilda's Club Greater Washington (GCGW) and to our Web site! We are thrilled to be laying the groundwork for a chapter here in the Nation's Capital, and hope you'll be part of our effort to establish a caring place where those touched by cancer can receive critical emotional and social support. As an affiliate of Gilda's Club Worldwide, GCGW will offer innovative, comprehensive programming that acts as a supplement to medical care and addresses the psychological, emotional, social and spiritual needs of those with cancer and their caregivers. Whereas medical treatment focuses on the disease, Gilda's Club programs focus on the person behind the disease. And while medicine focuses primarily on the patient, we recognize that the disease has a profound impact on families and friends too. That's why our doors will be open to anyone touched by cancer and all our services will be free of charge so they're available to anyone who needs them. Given that Washington, DC has the second highest rate of cancer in the country, we feel certain that the local community will greatly benefit from our presence here. GCGW is currently raising donations from businesses, foundations and individuals with the goal of opening our doors by late 2008. We invite anyone who wants to volunteer their ideas, energy, resources and time to join us in making a difference in the lives of those affected by cancer.
