"Having cancer gave me membership in an elite club to which I would rather not belong."
Welcome to Gilda's Club Greater Washington!
Gilda's Club is coming to Washington, DC! Efforts are underway to build
a local chapter that will offer vital emotional and social support
services to those living with cancer, their families and friends.
Services will include support groups, seminars, lectures and social
networking events - all free and focused on building community among
those who are touched by cancer and journeying on similar paths with
the disease. Events will take place in a non-residential but homelike
setting. All will be welcome to come as they are.
We invite you to be a part of this important effort to bring innovative
and much-needed cancer services to the nation's capital. There are many
opportunities to volunteer or provide financial support as we seek to
break ground on a unique and caring place where those with cancer and
those who love them can share their experiences, hopes, dreams, fears,
wisdom and information as they learn together to live with the disease.
Find out how you can help make a difference in the lives of those touched by cancer.
The mission of Gilda's Club Greater Washington is to provide a meeting
place where people with cancer, their families and friends can join
with others to build the social and emotional support that is essential
to coping with a cancer diagnosis. We will do this by offering support
and networking groups, lectures and workshops, and social events in a
non-residential, home-like setting. All services will be free.
Our lectures and workshops will cover timely topics such as
complementary medical treatments, pain management, spirituality issues
and medical issues. We will also hold yoga classes, art therapy,
meditation sessions, book clubs, card games and other activities
designed to be life-enhancing complements to medical treatment. Our
support groups will be led by licensed mental health professionals and
allow members to discuss issues that are both unique and common to
those living with any type of cancer. Individual groups will focus on
specific cancer types, and special services will address the unique
needs of teens and children.
